Rigorous Training and Regulation
An anesthesiologist first becomes a physician typically following completion of an undergraduate degree and medical school. This is followed by more years of formal education including an internship, residency, and often a specialty fellowship. Anesthesia professionals keep current on new technologies, research and procedures through continuing education and accreditation and certification programs administered by organizations such as the American Board of Anesthesiology (ABA).
Anesthesiologists have rigorously regulated their field for more than a century. Since 1905, the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) has functioned as an educational, research and scientific resource for anesthesiologists, patients, the public, and policymakers. In 1985, the Anesthesia Patient Safety Foundation emerged to further support research and industry collaboration towards anesthesia safety. |
